#WeCount August 2024 Update: Monthly Tracking of Abortion Provision
Save
#WeCount , a project of the Society of Family Planning, is a national abortion reporting effort that aims to measure monthly abortion utilization, nationally and by state, following the 2022 Dobbs v Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization US Supreme Court decision.
The latest report, released in August 2024, documents the number of abortions from April 2022 to March 2024- representing 21 months of abortion delivery post-Dobbs. This report quantifies the number of abortions that would have been expected, had 14 states not banned abortion and includes data regarding abortions provided via telehealth.
Key Findings:
- The average monthly number of abortions continues to increase slightly, as compared to 2023 and 2022.
- In January 2023, the national monthly number of abortions reached 100,000 for the first time since #WeCount began tracking abortion volume.
- This increase in numbers is driven by abortions provided via telehealth, which rose to 20% of all abortions in the first quarter of 2024; 80% of all abortions are provided via in-person care.
- Since providers started offering medication abortion via telehealth under shield law protections, on average around 9,200 people per month in states with bans or severe restrictions have accessed medication abortion in this way.
