Lactation Access
Overview
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and World Health Organization recommend breastfeeding for infants approximately 6 months after birth, and the AAP recommends continued breastfeeding, along with appropriate complementary foods introduced at about 6 months, for 2 years or beyond. These model bills focus on expanding lactation access and protecting parents from discrimination at work and in public spaces.
While the terms “breastfeeding” and “lactation” are frequently used to describe the expression of human milk, we honor that not all parenting people identify with that language. “Chest feeding” is a term that can be used to better include trans and non-binary parents. Advocates and state lawmakers can work closely together to ensure bill language best respects the needs of your communities.
_____
This policy agenda includes model legislation and resources to improve access to reproductive healthcare. We urge legislators to use the models as a starting point and to work closely with state advocates and community members to craft solutions specific to your state’s needs. Each policy includes strategic recommendations and sample language tailored for different audiences.
